Manila (second update)-Authorities and the management of the facility stated that an ice plant in Paranaque reported an obvious ammonia leak on Thursday, but it was immediately brought under control and no one was injured.

The BFP stated that the Parañaque Tube Ice Inc. ice plant in Barangay San Dionisio has suspended operations due to chemical spills and the authorities have also controlled the stench of ammonia.

In a statement, the ice factory stated that the leak was easily contained and no one was injured.

"The above chemical spill has been controlled immediately, and the factory manager confirmed that no one was injured before, after or after the control. We will assure the community that we will take the necessary actions to prevent this unfortunate incident from happening again," it said.

Arson investigator Giovannie Corbes said that as employees evacuated the factory, BFP received a call after 4 pm saying that there was a strange smell near the factory.

Some employees reported that the eyes and nose were irritated due to the leak, and occasionally chest pains occurred.

According to preliminary investigations, some employees found that the ice machine was under weak pressure in the afternoon until it finally stopped working.

When they turned on the machine to check what happened, they said it was when the ammonia leaked.

Presumably, the machine operator closed the valve that produced the smell of ammonia, which was also the time when the plant was suspended.

Firefighters who responded to the scene reported that, according to preliminary investigations, loose screws at the pipe joints were the source of the leak.

The leak was brought under control around 6pm

Liquid ammonia is used as a refrigerant or coolant for making purified tube ice.

It is also called anhydrous ammonia and is usually used in small amounts as a recovery agent for fainting or headaches, but it may cause similar symptoms when people are directly exposed to high concentrations.

Direct contact can at least cause irritation, or may burn body parts under high-level contact.

In early February, an ammonia leak occurred in a cold storage facility in Navotas, killing 2 people and injuring at least 60 people, and prompting the evacuation of surrounding communities.

Two people died, both of whom were workers in the ice factory. They died after an ammonia tank used in the facility exploded.
