Houston's next frozen food destination made its debut this week. Honeychild's Sweet Creams will open on Thursday, November 18th (600 N. Shepherd Dr. #450, next to Homestead Kitchen + Bar) in the MKT development zone.

Honeychild's was founded by Kathleen Morgan in 2014 and is widely acclaimed for its use of locally grown and seasonal ingredients from suppliers such as Mill-King Creamery, Plant It Forward, PPF Farming Co. and Lightsey Farms. After years of selling at Urban Harvest Farmers’ Market and making ice cream for several restaurants, Morgan is finally ready to open her first retail store.

She chose a 1,300-square-foot space with a highland hiking and biking trail as her back. The windows surround the kitchen, which underscores the extent to which Morgan wants customers to know the ingredients in their food. This also achieved her goal of having a place where family members feel at home.

"When I embarked on this adventure, I wanted a place where families could come and make their children feel safe when running around," Morgan said. "It turns out that it is. It provides a unique experience in this way."

Having a dedicated space also allows Morgan to provide more flavors than before. When it opens, the menu will offer 13 types of frozen custards and two fruit-flavored vegan sorbets. Choices include Honeychild’s signature mint chocolate chips and pecan pralines as well as seasonal sweet potato and grapefruit shortbreads.

Customers can also taste the new honey cornmeal waffle cones or make sandwiches with freshly baked biscuits. Pair a scoop with hot beverages such as hot chocolate or mustard.

"Here, I will be able to let people taste things and blend the flavors together," she said. "Let customers do things they couldn't do before [at the farmers' market]. Eat ice cream like I like ice cream. I think that would be cool."

How does Morgan like to eat ice cream?

"When I eat ice cream at home, there are two ways. A person is very greedy, give me this pint and I will eat it on the sofa," she said with a smile. "Usually, I make a hot fruit or granola and put some toppings on it."

Although Honeychild will start with a spoon, Morgan plans to add items such as sundaes and milkshakes to help customers achieve these goals. She bought a soft ice cream machine to make flavors without dairy products.

Those who want to learn more about sustainability or Morgan’s favorite political career can look up books from the small lending library. She understands that most people only care about the deliciousness of her custard—satisfied customers for many years will attest to the deliciousness of Honeychild's creations—but also look forward to communicating more deeply with those who want to have a deeper conversation.

"I think Houston is at this moment. Our food scene is growing, and people's interest in food and sustainable food is also growing," she said. "People are becoming more and more interested in the cause. I hope this space will be the starting point for establishing these plans."

Honeychild's will celebrate its grand opening on November 26, buy one get one free from 12pm to 3pm. Normal business hours are from Tuesday to Wednesday from 11 am to 9 pm, from Thursday to Friday from 11 am to 10 pm, Saturday from 10 am to 10 pm and Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm.
